On the final day of the Miłosz Festival, we met with Olesia Mamchych – a Ukrainian writer, poet, and essayist, currently a fellow of the Homines Urbani residency programme at Villa Decius.

On 1 July, the Kraków gala of the Karl Dedecius Award was held at Villa Decius – one of the most important distinctions for translators of German-language literature into Polish and of Polish literature into German. This year’s laureates were Eliza Borg, honoured for her translation of Jenny Erpenbeck’s novel Kairos into Polish, and Olaf Kühl, awarded for his translation of Szczepan Twardoch’s novel Null into German, published as Die Nulllinie. The Karl Dedecius Prize Gala at Villa Decius – a great celebration of translation and Polish-German dialogue 12.06.2026
In 2026, the Karl Dedecius Prize will be celebrated in two cities of particular importance for Polish-German literary dialogue: on 19 June in Darmstadt and on 1 July in Kraków, at Villa Decius. This year’s laureates are Eliza Borg and Olaf Kühl – translators whose work shows that literature crosses borders thanks to people who are able to carry across not only words, but also the meaning, rhythm, and experience embedded in language.

The most interesting literary meetings begin where conversations about the book itself end. They allow us to look behind the scenes of writing, to hear where stories, images, and characters come from, and to discover the way of seeing the world that stands behind the pages of a text. This was exactly the case during the meeting with Krzysztof Bielecki at Potocki Palace, organised as part of the “Literatura w Willi” series – a meeting that allowed participants to enter literature from within and get to know the author not only through his books, but also through his story of writing.

Dialogue, trust, responsibility, and attentiveness to others — these are the values that have defined the work of the Willa Decjusza Institute of Culture for nearly thirty years. During the conference “Culture as a Bridge between Poland and Germany: 50 Years of Cooperation (1976–2026): Assessment and Perspectives,” Professor Dominika Kasprowicz, Director of the Institute, spoke about culture as a space for building social resilience, mutual understanding, and shared European responsibility.

On 2 June, the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk hosted the second edition of the Kościuszko Forum, dedicated to supporting Belarusian democratic communities. This year’s edition was held under the motto “Culture as a Force for Democracy.”
