Uładzimir Niaklajeu "SAM"
"АДЗІН/SAM" is a new selection of poems by Uladzimir Niaklajev, one of the most outstanding writers of contemporary Belarus, winner of many national and international awards, and mentioned among the candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The book was published (in a bilingual edition) by the J. Nowak-Jeziorański College of Eastern Europe (in translations by Adam Pomorski, Bohdan Zadura, Czesław Seniuch and Jarosław Anders) as part of the Villa Decius Institute for Culture Publishing Series.
"Alone" is the name of not only a poem, the last volume and the entire book, but the overriding idea that marks and organises the entire poetic output of Uladzimir Niakliayeu. This attitude brings the poet closer to the philosophy of existentialism, which states that the pursuit of truth and the desire for freedom condemn a person to spiritual loneliness, incomprehension, alienation and exile. Uladzimir Niakliayeu is not only an outstanding poet, but also a man of unbelievable courage, who has often put loyalty to his ideals above the risk of losing his freedom or even his life. Humiliated and alone, even in his cell he did not lose hope for a free democratic Belarus. Let us not lose this hope either. This book had to be written because Uladzimir Niaklajeu is the voice of more than one generation of Belarusians fighting for the freedom and independence of their country.
Between 2021 and 2023, Uladzimir Niaklajeu was a Fellow of the ICORN Residency Programme (International Cities of Refuge Network ICORN) in Krakow, Poland.
