Andreas Volk

By awarding the prize to Andreas Volk, the jury for the first time honored a translator who deals mainly with the translation of dramatic works that played a significant role in the intensification of Polish-German theatrical contacts. Volk has gained a reputation thanks to his numerous translations of contemporary theater plays (including ones by Krzysztof Warlikowski, Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk, Tadeusz Słobodzianek) and is equally highly appreciated by Polish authors and directors in Germany. As a translator of monographs and essays in the field of humanities and cultural studies, he constantly contributes to the development of scientific dialogue between Poland and Germany (texts by, among others, Maria Janion, Erwin Axer, Krystian Lupa). His bibliography is supplemented with translations of contemporary prose and poetry (Jan Polkowski). In addition to translating for over 20 years, Andreas Volk is also involved as a cultural mediator, e.g. as a co-founder of the Polish-German annual "OderÜbersetzen", editor of the now defunct Polish-German-Ukrainian literary magazine "Radar" or as the originator of the "Übersetzer im Gespräch" and "Ausgezeichnet Lyrik" series (in cooperation with the Goethe Institute).
