On Tuesday, 1 April at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, 6 April at 7 p.m. we invite you to Villa Decius for an immersive theatre performance WHO WANTS MY EARTH? directed by Butrint Pasha, which is the result of three months of the artist's work at Villa Decius as part of the ARTS IN EXILE residency programme.
WHO WANTS MY EARTH? is a moving theatre performance that explores the fundamental human need for peace - or at least a dignified death. The play makes us reflect on how experiences shape our thoughts and how war can breed trauma, hatred and the desire for revenge. The drama was inspired by conversations with Ukrainian refugees in Bucharest and Krakow, as well as the author's personal experience growing up in the war-torn Balkans of the 1990s. The main character of the play is a Ukrainian refugee who returns to her home to face the painful past of the day she lost her family. The horrors of the day she fled are transformed into a strength that allows her to move on through life.
The playe takes place in the form of immersive theatre, using elements of Theatre of Cruelty and Theatre of the Poor, emphasising the symbolism of war, memory and forgiveness. The performance will be presented in the spaces of Villa Decius - both inside and in the garden - where successive scenes will symbolise the seven days of the week and the Seventh Circle of Hell according to Dante. The performance will conclude with a symbolic burial of the instruments of murder, as an expression of hope for a world free of violence.
In the play, which I started working on a year ago by interviewing Ukrainian refugees and Villa Decius was finishing it, I try to draw attention to the threat of extinction of the Ukrainian people and their language. The war in Ukraine is based primarily on racism, systematic hatred and an attempt to erase the history of this centuries-old nation. On 1 April, I will show in Krakow an immersive performance Who Wants My Land?’, which will be a unique experience set in the spaces of Villa Decius and its surroundings. - says Butrint Pasha.
