Triangle for Ukrainian Artists 30.08.2024
Study visit by Ukrainian playwrights at Villa Decius.
From 30.08 - 8.09.2024, as part of the international Triangle for Ukrainian Artists TUA project, of which Villa Decius is a partner, we will host six Ukrainian playwrights - Olga Maciupa, Lena Lagushonkova, Olena Kudaieva, Kateryna Penkova, Andrii Bondarenko, Nina Zahozhenko, Oksana Savchenko and playwright Andrii Bondarenko.
During their stay in Krakow, a series of lectures, workshops and study visits to the most important theatre institutions in Krakow (including the Stary Theatre, Słowacki Theatre, Łaźnia Nowa, Teatr Ludowy) will take place, as well as meetings with representatives of the theatre community in Poland (including from ‘Didaskali’, the Theatre Institute, ‘Dialog’ and the Tadeusz Różewicz Drama Award) organised by Villa Decius.
‘Triangle for Ukrainian Artists’ (TUA) is a two-year EU project under the Creative Europe programme, initiated by Swedish cultural institutions: Kulturhuset Stadsteatern and Rikstolvan Konst.
Based on cooperation between Ukraine, Poland and Sweden, the project aims to support the work of Ukrainian playwrights and dramatists during the ongoing war by organising literary residencies and networking meetings, as well as providing content support and translations.
The project will produce 10 plays written by Ukrainian male and female artists during the literary residencies organised by Rikstolvan. The resulting works will be translated into Swedish and made available on the websites of Rikstolvan and the Dramaturgs' Theatre. The plays will also be staged at the Kyiv Theatre Festival and the 2025 Performing Arts Biennale in Sweden.
Another important part of the project will be the creation of a document (policy paper), which, based on research into the needs of the Ukrainian artistic community, will indicate methods for supporting freedom of expression and democracy that could also be applied in other countries affected by the crisis of war. The paper will be presented at the project's concluding conference to be held at Villa Decius in Krakow in the autumn of 2025.

Kulturhuset/Stadsteatern in Sweden is the initiator and coordinating partner of the project. Based on more than 10 years of experience as one of the sanctuaries of the ICORN network for persecuted artists, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern contributes by offering professional support to the playwrights, organising events to promote collaboration between Swedish and Ukrainian artists and offering mentoring to Ukrainian playwrights. In addition, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern also leads the sub-project "Cultural Bank", which supports the theatre in Kiev with collected material and equipment, which they need to run their theatre scene in Kiev during the ongoing war.
The Centre for Modern Ukrainian Drama/Theatre of Playwrights in Kyiv is a playwright-run theatre group with an extensive network of Ukrainian playwrights. The theatre also has its own venue in central Kyiv, which is currently being renovated. The project also includes supporting this physical location in Kyiv with technical equipment and mentoring from Kulturhuset Stadsteatern and other performing arts organisations in Sweden.
Rikstolvan in Sweden, an art gallery and meeting place for contemporary culture in Österlen in southern Sweden, has offered residencies for Ukrainian contemporary artists and playwrights since spring 2022. In addition, Rikstolvan has founded "The Archive of modern Ukrainian Drama" and has a network of translators and publishers to disseminate Ukrainian drama.
The Villa Decius Institute for Culture in Krakow, which has extensive experience working with the Ukrainian diaspora and endangered artists, plays a central role in the project by collecting, documenting and sharing the project's methods and experiences with others working with artists in exile or in conflict zones. Villa Decius will also offer study visits and networking opportunities in Poland for the project participants and playwrights, their geographical location making them a natural hub for the project.
As an associated partner, Scensverige (Swedish Performing Arts Coalition) is mainly involved in the dissemination of the plays written within the project. Through its more than 200 member organisations, its international activities and as organisers of the Performing Arts Biennale 2025, Scene Sweden offers a large network of contacts and a number of opportunities to disseminate the project's results of plays, methods and experiences.
