Utopia / Dystopia
Our present day, too, suffers from an excess of dystopian reality. Wars, genocide, the arms race, exploitation, the pandemic, ecological catastrophe, the misery of migration, the erosion of democracy amid rising populism. We have undoubtedly found ourselves at the dark pole of the utopian dialectic. Indeed, we have gone so far that the "death of utopia" has become a widely accepted belief, while some thinkers see the only hope for our futureless world in an urgent revival of utopian thinking. But is it possible to escape More's sceptical and sardonic dialectic? Can we conceive of a utopia that does not, in reality, become a dystopia?
In the new issue of Radar, devoted to the theme Utopia/Dystopia, we pose precisely this question about the utopian–dystopian dialectic—to ourselves and to our readers. Radar is a literary magazine, so this issue naturally interests us above all in a literary context. We approach it both in relation to literature in its broadest sense and through literature itself, which remains the most important vehicle for utopian and dystopian narratives and speculation.

International cooperation
Originally published between 2010 and 2014, Radar returned in 2023 and remains a unique presence on the literary magazine landscape. The ambitious idea of creating a trilingual magazine with a democratically run editorial team enables something truly exceptional: a direct, tangible dialogue on the pages of Radar.
Literature emerging from three different traditions, shaped by distinct cultural and linguistic codes, reflects itself in one another, searching for points of connection.
The consistent presentation of each text alongside the original and two translations is also a celebration of literary translation. Thanks to the work of our translators, we not only bring Polish readers closer to texts from both east and west of our borders, but also introduce authors from Poland to readers abroad. In the pages of Radar, the guiding idea of Villa Decius as a place of encounter becomes a reality.
