Visit Marcelina
Welcome to the Open Day at Villa Decius
On Sunday, 21 July, we would like to invite you to Villa Decius for an Educational Open Day "Visit to Marcelina". The theme of the event will be the figure of Princess Marcelina Czartoryska - patriot and philanthropist, creator of Krakow's Patriotic Salon, talented pianist, pupil and friend of Fryderyk Chopin, and - in the years 1869-1894 - owner of Villa Decius in Krakow. Marcelina Czartoryska created in the Villa Decius one of the most famous music salons in Cracow, where she hosted the aristocracy and the most eminent personalities from the artistic, scientific and literary worlds, as well as young people. She herself was an extremely valued performer of Chopin's works in artistic circles, with whom she had taken piano lessons in Paris in her youth. Prominent artists of the period, such as Delacroix, Mickiewicz, Liszt and Rubinstein recognised Marcelina Czartoryska as an outstanding interpreter of Chopin's works, admiring her musical artistry and her exemplary artistry, thoroughly faithful to the master. She also amassed a rich collection of Chopiniana. Some she ordered personally from artists; others she probably purchased at an auction of furniture and objects left by the late composer. She donated a large part of her collection to the collection of the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow.

Throughout the event, a short film entitled Z Chopinem w salonie Marceliny Czartoryskiej [With Chopin in the salon of Marcelina Czartoryska] (dir. by Romana Agnel) will be screened on a loop in Cinema u Marceliny, the Alcove of the Fireplace Room on the ground floor of the Villa.
During the Open Day, Villa Decius will be open to visitors on an individual tours with an audio guide in Polish and English, and after the tour visitors will be able to solve a Memory Quiz to win a set of puzzles.
