Elżbieta Kalinowska is a translator, editor and culture manager. She was the deputy director of the Book Institute, and has been working as a publisher of non-fiction in the Foksal Publishing Group since 2016. Kalinowska has been translating German-language literature for over 20 years for leading Polish publishing houses, such as Czarne, W.A.B. or Wydawnictwo Literackie. The list of her publications includes over 20 contemporary novels as well as popular science books and reportages. She is interested in contemporary trends in German-language literature, mainly by authors from immigrant backgrounds, such as Zsuzsa Bánk, Terézia Mora, Olga Grjasnowa, Sherko Fatah and Feridun Zaimoğlu. This new German literature, created by authors rooted not only in German culture and poetics, poses an additional challenge for translators when it comes to conveying the nuances between the foreign and the known, reproducing the meaning creatively, yet faithfully. Kalinowska also translates reportage by, among others, Wolfgang Bauer and Florian Klenk. Her oeuvre is characterized by span and freedom in the selection of authors as well as mastery of the text.
