What is Europe to you? 25.04.2025

A photo exhibition and workshops by Lisa Borgiani.
Photo exhibition WHAT IS EUROPE TO YOU?

The Villa Decius Institute for Culture together with the Italian Institute in Krakow invite you to the opening of a photography exhibition by Italian artist Lisa Borgiani entitled ‘What is Europe for you?’ on 25 April (Friday) at 5 pm. The exhibition will be presented at the Shooting Range at 220 Królowa Jadwigi Street in Krakow.

‘What is Europe for you?’ is a photographic project created by an Italian artist who, starting in 2019, visits major European cities, asking the people she photographs the question: what is Europe for you?

‘What is Europe to you?’ is a story in images that leads Lisa Borgiani to various European cities: in 2019 to Athens and Berlin, in 2020 to Milan and Rome, in 2021 to Paris and the island of Ventotene, in 2022 to Budapest, the Baltics, Guben-Gubin, Malta, in 2023 to Strasbourg, Bonn and Dresden, in 2024 to Madrid and Lisbon. In 2024, she also visited Krakow, thus the Polish city joined the rich catalogue of European places represented in the Italian photographer's original project. The exhibition has been enriched with portraits and statements of Krakow's inhabitants, and the latest boards will be found among those of Milan, Athens, Madrid, Kyiv, Lviv and many other cities.

‘What is Europe for you?’ is an artistic journey into oneself, in search of feelings, a dialogue between the images and words of the people one meets, regardless of nationality, gender, profession, religious beliefs or social and cultural background.

‘What is Europe for you?’ is the story of Europeans about Europe, a story about their identity, their values of democracy, freedom and human rights.

The exhibition can be viewed at the Shooting Range from 26 April to 30 June 2025, Tuesday to Friday and Sundays from.11.00 to.18.00. Admission is free.

LISA BORGIANI
Living and working in Milan, her installations and photographs have been exhibited in private and public institutions around the world, including the European Parliament in Brussels and the Institutes of Italian Culture in London, Singapore, San Francisco, Vienna and other countries.
The artist's attention has for many years been drawn to contemporary and creative interpretations of photography and conceptual ‘mobile installations’ created on a large scale to interact with existing architecture. The conceptual aspect combines a focus on installation within an environment (in keeping with its architecture and history) and the development of an ongoing dialogue with the surrounding space, offering the public new ways to observe and enjoy interacting with the resulting work. These interests of Lisa Borgiani resulted in the realisation of an artist residency in one of the houses designed in 1939 on the island of Comacina on Lake Como by the famous architect Pietro Lingeri (1894-1968), who was one of the founders of Italian rationalist architecture. From 2019, Lisa Borgiani is working on the project What is Europe for you?, a photographic journey through the main European cities and capitals.

The Italian Cultural Institute in Krakow is a partner of the project.
