The Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello 09.08.2023
The call for applications for the 20th edition of the Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello is open!
Following the initiative of the Villa Decius Association, the Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2002-2003) was established in 2003 with an aim to promote human rights, democracy, and tolerance and had its first edition already in 2004.
The patron of the Prize - a remarkable man and a distinguished Brazilian diplomat - worked within the UN structures holding a number of important offices over several decades. In 2003, as the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Iraq, he was killed in a bomb attack on the UN compound in Baghdad. He worked all his life to protect freedom and human rights, to combat terrorism and the refugee crisis and to uphold international law.
Previous winners of the Prize include Tadeusz Mazowiecki (Poland), Alyaksandr Milinkevich (Belarus), Krystyna Pryjomko-Serafin (UK), Leyla Ynus (Azerbaijan), Pietro Bartolo (Italy), Basil Kerski (Poland), or Tamila Tasheva (Ukraine), Serhiy Zadan (Ukraine). Among those honoured with the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Award were institutions such as: Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (Poland), Memorial Association (Russian Federation), Halina Nieć Legal Aid Centre (Poland), Foundation against Human Trafficking and Slavery (Poland), Interreligious Council of Albania (Albania), Centre for Interethnic Dialogue and Tolerance "Amalipe" (Bulgaria), Polish Medical Bowl (Poland) Centre for the Defence of Human Rights "Viasna" (Belarus), Centre for Peace and Reconciliation in Glencree (Ireland).
APPLICATIONS
Candidates for the Award can be individuals and institutions from Poland and abroad. We encourage you to submit individuals or institutions working for the protection of human rights and peaceful coexistence and cooperation of societies, religions and cultures.
Applications for the Prize in both categories may be submitted by institutionsas well as individuals. The Prize is awarded in two equal categories: individual and non-governmental organisation.
We invite you to nominate candidates and institutions for the Prize:

Applications can be submitted until August 20, 2023.
The Award Ceremony will take place on October 26, 2023.
The winners will receive a statuette by Andrzej Renes, a commemorative diploma, and a financial award funded by the Sponsors.

Sérgio Vieira de Mello (1948–2003) was a Brazilian diplomat fluent in six languages, who defended two doctorates in humanities at Sorbonne. In several decades of work for the UN, he served at various posts, including those of UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy in Kosovo, East Timor UN Transitional Administrator, 3rd UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2002–03), and the EU Secretary General Special Envoy for Iraq. While holding that function, he was killed in a bomb raid on the UN headquarters in Baghdad on 19 August 2003. Throughout his life, Sérgio Vieira do Mello actively supported protection of freedom and human rights, intercultural dialogue, fight on terrorism and refugee crisis, and supported compliance to international law.
