Jan Bukowski | Exhibition 16.06.2023

We invite you for an exhibition on the occasion of the artist's 150th birthday.
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jan Bukowski, an artist of the Young Poland period, on 12 June 2023 the Villa Decius Institute of Culture opened an exhibition in Planty Park in Krakow, presenting the silhouette of the Krakow artist from the Young Poland circle.
The opening of the exhibition was attended by the Mayor of Krakow, Professor Jacek Majchrowski, as well as Dominika Kasprowicz, Director of the Villa Decius Institute for Culture, and its creators - Professor Piotr de Bończa Bukowski (author of the texts for the exhibition) and Dr Tadeusz Łyczakowski (author of the photographs presented at the exhibition).

Jan Bukowski was an illustrator, painter, draftsman and stained glass artist associated with the Young Poland movement. He is best known for his artistic activity in the field of typography and book illustration.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Munich, Paris and Italy. He was one of the founders of the Polish Applied Arts Society. From 1904 he was the artistic director of the Jagiellonian University printing house, and from 1912 a professor at the School of Artistic Industry in Krakow, which was a department of the State Industrial School. He collaborated with many artists from Poland, including Stanisław Wyspiański.

The exhibition has been designed on the basis of photographs by Dr Tadeusz Łyczakowski, which present Jan Bukowski's oeuvre: polychrome paintings in sacred buildings and public edifices, as well as stained glass windows from various places where his realisations have been preserved, and graphic designs. The artist's oeuvre is divided into individual sections, such as applied graphics, easel and wall paintings and stained glass. On display are, among others, the artist's realisations made in the city of Krakow, e.g. in St. Mary's Basilica and the Wielopolski Palace - the seat of the Krakow Magistrate. Applied art, to which Bukowski devoted much attention, is also emphasised, such as textiles, posters, as well as numerous book illustrations, which he designed while working as the artistic manager of the University Printing House in Krakow.

The extensive photographic material is accompanied by a text edited by Professor Piotr de Boncza Bukowski outlining the nature of Jan Bukowski's work.

The event is being held to mark the 150th anniversary of the artist's birth.

The exhibition will be presented in the Planty in Krakow from Poselska Street towards Wawel from 12 June to 31 August 2023.
