Jakob Andratsch Begins Literary Residency in Krakow 20.08.2026

Austrian writer and independent artist Jakob Andratsch has arrived in Krakow and begun his residency as part of the Tyrol Residency, a joint programme of Krakow UNESCO City of Literature and Villa Decius. The first part of his residency will take place under the auspices of the Krakow Festival Office, the operator of the UNESCO CoL programme, after which he will move to Villa Decius. The initiative provides the conditions for intensive creative work, research and archival enquiries, as well as opportunities to connect with local and international literary communities.

The Tyrol Residency in Krakow creates a unique space for literary and cultural exchange between Austria and Poland. The programme is addressed to authors whose work explores questions of language, identity, memory and the experience of crossing borders – both geographical and cultural. It draws on historical and contemporary Polish-Austrian relations, as well as the multifaceted connections between Tyrol and the former region of Galicia, while creating space for creative reflection on contemporary European experience.

Jakob Andratsch (b. 1995) is a writer and independent artist. His work moves between prose, poetry, audio drama and screenwriting, exploring diverse forms of narrative and literary expression. The jury particularly recognised the high quality of his project and his sensitive, contemporary approach to questions of language, belonging and the experience of crossing borders – themes that form an important point of reference for the Tyrol Residency in Krakow.

The author was unanimously selected by a competition jury comprising representatives of the Consulate General of Austria in Krakow, the Government of the Province of Tyrol, Villa Decius and the Krakow Festival Office, the operator of the Krakow UNESCO City of Literature programme.

During his residency, the programme's laureate will have the opportunity to become acquainted with two important institutions contributing to Krakow's literary and intellectual life. Half of his stay will be spent in the Krakow Festival Office's residency apartment – the operator of the Krakow UNESCO City of Literature programme – and the other half at Villa Decius, one of Central Europe's leading centres for international intellectual and cultural exchange. The residency provides the conditions for intensive creative work, research and archival enquiries, as well as opportunities to establish connections with local and international literary communities.

The Tyrol Residency in Krakow is not only a grant enabling the author to work on a new literary project, but also an opportunity to build lasting relationships and deepen cultural cooperation between Poland and Austria.
