Come and visit Princess Marcelina! 21.07.2024

On Sunday, 21st July, we invite you to Villa Decius for an Educational Open Day: “Visit Marcelina”.
The event will focus on Princess Marcelina Czartoryska, a patriot and philanthropist who owned Villa Decius from 1869 to 1894. A gifted pianist and a student and friend of Fryderyk Chopin, she was also an influential member of Krakow's cultural scene, known for establishing the Krakow Patriotic Salon.

Indeed, Marcelina was responsible for founding one of the most renowned music salons in Krakow, where she hosted distinguished guests from aristocratic, artistic, scientific, literary, and youth communities. She was an extremely appreciated performer of Chopin’s works in Paris, where she had taken piano lessons during her youth. Outstanding artists of the era, such as Delacroix, Mickiewicz, Liszt, and Rubinstein, recognized Marcelina Czartoryska as an excellent interpreter of Chopin's works, admiring her musical abilities and exemplary, thoroughly faithful interpretation of the master's art.

Moreover, she collected a rich array of Chopin-related items. Some she ordered personally from artists, while others she likely acquired at the auction of furniture and objects from the deceased composer. A significant part of her collection was generously donated by Marcelina to the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow.

During your day at Villa Decius for the “Visit Marcelina” event, we will take you on a journey back to the 19th century. The full-day program will include a variety of educational and cultural activities for both children and adults. The youngest visitors will have the opportunity to participate in artistic workshops inspired by the decor of Villa Decius, specifically the loggia decorated with oriental tiles that Marcelina Czartoryska brought to the Villa. Additionally, they can join the well-known detective, Ms. Fishka, for a premiere detective walk inspired by the princess. Meanwhile, the older visitors are also invited to explore Villa Decius. They will learn, among other things, on what occasion Jan Matejko painted a portrait of Princess Marcelina, why Jacek Malczewski lived in Villa Decius, and what the loggia of Villa Decius has in common with Portuguese azulejos tiles.

This trip through the enchanting 19th century in Villa Decius will lead us to a grand ball, where we will learn, together with the artists of the Cracovia Danza Court Ballet, to dance the elegant contra dance. Then, we will guide you to the cinema room, magically transformed into Duchess Marcelina’s cozy living room. Inspired by the biography of Czartoryska, we will have the incredible opportunity to listen to live performances of Chopin's mazurkas, which Czartoryska once interpreted flawlessly.

We have also heard that on this day, something truly magical is going to happen at Villa Decius! Could it be that Princess Czartoryska will be there to greet her guests in person?
