Somnium – Exhibition of Works by Karolina Skorek
Villa Decius presents an exhibition by Karolina Skorek, a multidisciplinary artist whose surreal compositions offer a commentary on the surreal nature of everyday life.
Somnium
Somnium brings together works by Karolina Skorek created over several years and across different series. They are united by a distinctive use of light, constructed in a manner reminiscent of Baroque painting, the stillness of the staged scene, and symbols that point beyond the motifs themselves. Slavic mythology meets the tradition of European painting, while light and shadow become a language of what remains hidden.
The works, previously exhibited in the United Kingdom, China and the United States, are presented together for the first time in this particular configuration and in a Polish context. The exhibition also features previously unpublished works, as well as pieces created during the artist’s residency at Villa Decius.

Karolina Athena Skorek
Born in 1985 in Sosnowiec, Karolina Athena Skorek is a Polish multidisciplinary artist based in North Wales, working at the intersection of photography, digital painting and printmaking. She draws inspiration for her dreamlike, light-driven works from mythology and the paintings of the Old Masters. She is the recipient of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award and a laureate of The Portrait Masters. Her works are part of a permanent exhibition in London. She teaches illustration, concept art and design at universities in China.
Opening and visiting
The exhibition will open on Thursday, 3 September at 6:00 pm in the Lubomirski Hall at Villa Decius.
Admission to the opening is free.
The exhibition will be on view until 18 October. It can be visited according to Villa Decius’ visiting schedule, with admission included in the regular ticket price.
