We invite you to Villa Decius for the jubilee exhibition of sculpture by Krystyna Nowakowska on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her creative work.
The exhibition is a selection of 29 titles, the achievements to date of Krystyna Nowakowska, a sculptor who has hundreds of realisations to her credit. The artist's first works were created during her studies at the Faculty of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, which she completed with her diploma project in the atelier of Professor Jerzy Bandura in 1979.
The most frequent recurring motifs in Krystyna Nowakowska's work are angels, chairs, dance and women. Among these, the motif to which she devotes particular attention is dance. This stems from the artist's own interest in dance, especially flamenco dance, which is reflected in the titles exhibited at the exhibition such as: ‘Flamenco III’, “Flamenco VII” and “In the rhythm of flamenco”. The chosen subject matter becomes a challenge to express notions of rhythm and movement or the desire to record changing shapes or the moving body. Another important theme in Krystyna Nowakowska's sculptures is the woman. These works are dominated by simplified, geometrised forms that are a record of emotions and fleeting moments. It is not without reason that the slender ‘Woman in red’ is placed in the central part of the exhibition.
The artist creates works on the borderline between abstraction and figuration. She consistently uses traditional sculptural techniques, modelling her works in wax, which she then casts in bronze or realises in chromonickel, achieving interesting textures and complex forms. She places the resulting compositions on stone or bronze bases. In the last half-century, she has presented her sculptures in Krakow, Poland and abroad, taking part in collective exhibitions and organising ca. 40 individual exhibitions in galleries, among others: Vollenhouve-Holland (1992), La Galerie du City Concorde-Luxemburg (1996), Konsthalle Solvesborg in Sweden (2000), ‘Artemis’ in Krakow (2002), ZPAP ‘Pro Arte’'in Zielona Góra (2003), Museum of the City of Krakow (2004), “TAKT” in Vienna (2017) and many others.
Krystyna Nowakowska's oeuvre is rich and continues to grow with new sculptures. Joanna Warchoł, president of the Cracow District of the Association of Polish Artists, sums up the 50th anniversary of her creative work as follows: ‘The current exhibition, organised at Villa Decius in Krakow, is a renewed jubilee feast, where savouring Krystyna Nowakowska's works will become another journey into the mysterious world of the artist's personality, imagination and sculptural craftsmanship.’
The exhibition will be on display at Villa Decius until 27 November 2024 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 6pm and on selected Sundays from 11am to 6pm.
